286 – Faith: Hollywood and Vine

Faith: Hollywood and Vine

We sneak one more superhero comic into our Best of 2016 megaseries as we read “Faith: Hollywood and Vine” by Jody Houser. In her first solo book, Zephyr has left her team, moved to LA, and is looking for some crime to fight only to stumble into a big plot. David and Andy talk about the experience of being introduced to a whole new universe of continuity we didn’t even know existed, the role of body types in cape comics, and positive representation. Plus, Andy’s stoked about the half-scale BB-8 and there’s some spoiler-free discussion of Netflix’s new Iron Fist show. This week’s comic starts at about 15:00 in.

285 – Joyride: Ignition

Joyride: Ignition

Out Best of 2016 megaseries gets a boost of energy as we read “Joyride: Ignition” by Jackson Lanzing. In this incredibly slick, fast-paced comic, a group of humans escapes their dystopian home in search of adventure! And oh boy do they find it. We talk about the flow of the art, the concise bits of character, and the mashing of sci-fi tropes that keep this book powered up. But seriously, there’s a surprisingly solid amount of character for such an action-heavy and short trade paperback. Plus, we talk about gunpla and Gundam a bit. This week’s comic discussion starts around minute 10.

284 – Rosalie Lightning

Rosalie Lightning

Our Best of 2016 megaseries gets an emotional punch to the gut this week as we read “Rosalie Lightning” by Tom Hart. In this graphic novel memoir, Hart recounts the experience of his life shortly after the death of his daughter. We talk about all the ways this comic works — from raw emotional expression to personal connection. This is a difficult piece to read, but also an important one. At the top of the show, we banter a bit about the new A-Force action figures and some Star Trek names.
