263 – Black River

Black River

We continue our Best of the Rest of 2015 by depressing ourselves greatly as we discuss “Black River” by Josh Simmons. The world has ended and a group of women tries very hard to give their lives meaning. We talk about the tones of anarchy in this broken world, the depravity of the rape camp, and the complete nihilism of this comic. Seriously, just thinking about it again bums me out. Plus: we talk about Pokemon GO.

262 – Wytches

Wytches

We check out a horror hit for our next episode in the Rest of the Best of 2015 series by reading “Wytches” by Scott Snyder. In this story, a family moves to a small town only to discover tat there’s something evil living in the forest. Wow, that sounds a lot like 80% of all horror media out there. We talk about the horror genre, from its tropes to how we measure successful horror and discuss tropes of horror art. Plus we talk a little bit about a new Gundam Build Fighters show and the immediate success of DC’s Rebirth.

261 – Descender: Tin Stars

Descender: Tin Stars

We take on the Rest of the Best of 2015 by starting with “Descender: Tin Stars” by Jeff Lemire. In this sci-fi comic, a race of hugemongous robots start eradicating the human population but suddenly stop; then, years later, a boy companion robot may hold the key to the entire mystery. We debate what happens when you try to program for group empathy, the awesomeness of the code name “The Hardwire,” and whether or not Driller is kind of a gangster.
