254 – Assassination Classroom

Assassination Classroom

We wrap up our “Oh, Japan” series with guest host Alex by reading “Assassination Classroom” by Yusei Matsui. In this completely weird manga, a powerful entity has threatened to destroy the world but he’s giving a classroom of reject students one year to kill him before he does under the caveat that he becomes their teacher for that year. We try to piece together what the heck is going on here (and probably utterly fail at it). Plus, we talk about Batman vs. Superman, Tiger & Bunny, and some other stuff we’ve been watching. 253 – One Punch Man

One Punch Man

Since we just couldn’t help ourselves, we’re squeezing in an episode on the “One Punch Man” anime. In a world of monsters and superheroes, Saitama has the insane power of being able to defeat any enemy with just one punch. We talk about the show’s ballsy premise, the awesome absurdity, and the OPM ethos. Plus, we all watch somebody play The Division on twitch. For past episode, go to www.WelcometoComics.com. 252 – ARIA

ARIA

We venture into the culture-specific genre “Slice of Life” in our ongoing Oh, Japan series and discuss ARIA by Kozue Amano. In this retro-future series, Gondola driver Akari explores the terraformed planet of Mars with boundless enthusiasm and care. We talk about the uniqueness of the Slice-of-Life genre, its implications on other genres like Science-Fiction, and the importance of quality translation. We started recording a little late, so there isn’t too much banter or news this week. For past episodes, go to www.WelcometoComics.com.
