So I’ve been thinking about this for a while and I came up with some questions that I had while thinking about the Medusa myth and possibilities:
In the myth, Medusa was killed by Perseus. He was able to kill her by viewing a refection of Medusa in his shield. His shield was said to be polished. I don’t think it was a magical shield – it was polished shield given to him by Athena. Therefore, can it be concluded that you can look at Medusa so long as it isn’t a direct view? Does that include transparent barriers, such as glass?
Is her stone power voluntary? Is it an energy transfer that she uses out of her eyes? If so, can you wear goggles or some fort of mask to shields the energy from affecting you?
If it’s a mere gaze upon her hideous face, do you need a full view or only partial view to turn to stone? If you need a full view, does a partial view give you other symptoms, like migraines or nausea? Does the effect hoit everyone equally? They say Beauty is in the Eye of the Beholder, so could there be someone who doesn’t think Medusa is a hideous monster, and thus resist her stone gaze? What if she’s only killing out of self defense? The gaze is only a way to pacify attackers? Instead of a drawn out fight in which they could die slowly, she feels that turning them to stone is the quickest and most painless way to eliminate them?
The myth says that she was raped in Athena’s temple by one of the gods, but Athena punished her by turning her into a gorgon. Does she now hold bitterness against the gods for this injustice, as she’s the one being punished for the being the victim of this deed? Has the constant supply of heroes coming in to kill her turned her mad and bloodthirsty? Does she have followers; people who have heard of her story and worship her as one of the gods? What is her weapon of defense? How does someone fight her exactly? Behind pillars? Open room? What’s a good defense against her gaze?
Could the hero who slays her be blind? If the power is dependent upon gazing upon her, someone who cannot see must be immune to it, right?
Does her bitterness lead to her appearance? Could she be changed back to a human if someone came along to calm her heart and love her? Could she be redeemed?
